hehe, its a bit different to quake. I heard one review that says its a mix between quake and CS:go.
Basically you choose 3 mercs that you can swap between per game. they each have special abilities. I'd recommend Skyhammer, Nader and Aura at the moment to start. When you die, you join a timer wave to respawn, but if your body remains in tact, a medic can revive you. When you make a kill, make sure to keep shooting till their colour goes away, or hit them with your knife (mouse3)
Skyhammer is a basic soldier but can call in an airstrike which demolishes people easy. The strike always comes in from right to left over the top of the grenade you throw out.
Nader is a slightly weaker soldier but can throw 5 grenades which regen over time. She can also blow up after she dies to get that final kill.
Aura is a medic and lets you drop heal stations to heal friendlies, and you cal also revive 'downed' players.
I dont think I have you on my steam list, feel free to add me. Current name is 'Borg'. Gubben and inky play a fair bit too. im sure we will all help you out if you let us know you are loading it up. Oh, and it sounds kinda silly, but run thru the tutorial. its pretty quick but shows you controls and runs you thru the idea of what to do reasonably well.

What i found baffling at first was the concept that you have Mercs on your team cos i wasnt sure what that meant. It confused me to think there were bots running with me, when in fact its just the choice of 3 classes you can make available for yourself each re-spawn... as explained above by Borg and Ink.
Its an awesome game, which has improved immensely on its earlier incarnation, ET RTCW as it enables all classes to perform the functions of reviving (Medic) or arming/defusing/building etc (Engie). Though if the Merc (class) you choose each spawn specialises in either of those functions, you perform them at a much faster rate than if it is not the class you are currently using... I always thought a combo of engie and medic would have been awesome when playing ET and thats what they have enabled now, with heaps of nuance so that each gamer can have a variety of skills depending on their own styles and interests in these game formats. Heaps to learn, a big curve especially with regards to the maps and their objectives etc... but heaps good fun, really hope PiT get into it... i only have a basic Steam account so cant friend anyone, so if you have the full account hit me up... Gubben....

not sure about your GPU Dv8 but:
Items include:
Five Full Time Mercs - Permanently unlock Proxy, Vassili, Sawbonez, Arty and Fragger. Kinda handy depending on what's already on the fortnightly "free rotation"
Proxy – Fast, agile close-quarters warrior equipped with close range weaponry and proximity mines.
Vassili – Long-range sniper capable of taking out enemies from a distance. Heartbeat sensor highlights enemies, even through walls.
Sawbonez – Medic equipped with SMG perfect for CQB. Can revive and heal teammates.
Arty – Support specialist capable of calling in artillery salvos. Can throw ammo packs to keep teammates loaded.
Fragger – Aggressive point man with a big gun, lots of ammo, and devastating Frag grenades.
50,000 in-game Credits – Get a head start on unlocking Loadout Cards to customize your new Mercs, or keep your credits in the bank for when the next new Merc becomes available. Honestly? It takes no time at all in the beginning to accrue this
Two Elite Loadout Cases – Get your hands on some Silver, Gold, or Cobalt Loadout Cards for your squad. Not that amazing
In saying that, I still bought it Only after about 6hrs of game time though. I'd recommend trialing it before throwing cash at it

The only disadvantage for not getting the DLC, is that you dont have as many mercs (classes) available at the start. There are always 5 available to you as a free player, and you earn credits to unlock the rest as you play.
Paying money does not give you access to special weapons that you cant get via grinding for credits, it only speeds the process up. You get free random upgrades just by playing, or you can buy them for cash but you do get them quite frequently. Its pretty much all randomly generated too, so purchasing a case is kinda pointless anyway.
