Yeah me too Spud. When Ozzy was here last I couldn't afford the $40 for the gig.

I'm going to the next Countdown gig soon .. I'm not expecting much, the first one I would have liked better..
I'm mainly going for a night out 'cause friends are going.

I went to the Countdown concert last week.. had a great time.

Apart from the Angels, the highlight for me was the reformation of Supernaut.

My mate and I were headbanging and air guitaring away. :D

This clip is from the actual Melbourne concert.

Battles - Mirrored

First new thing I've heard in quite a while that really made me sit up and listen. They toured recently but I missed them...heard they were great and from the footage I saw it looked like they were having fun.

It's about time I shared some new music with you buttlords :D

Firstly - . These guys are geniuses I reckon - they can basically do no wrong. The genre is hard to define, it includes elements of black metal and folk music - don't let the black metal part put you off, it is really understated. It's definitely metal, but it is different, there really is no other band like them.

Some youtube:
This song "Not Unlike the Waves" from their latest album "Ashes Against the Grain" is their first video. It's a cut back version of a 9 and a half minute song so it is just a taste.

This is just some fan made stuff but you can listen to the song "Fallen Snow" which is IMO the best one on Ashes Against the Grain. The vocals are mostly a whispered black metal croak but the guitars are beautiful in their melodic simplicity (lol TM spud 2008)

And to end a 2 parter - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion, a 15 minutes journey. This is one of the best songs ever written IMO, just beautiful.

I'm going to change it up here and post some new wave folk music. This is the band . The music is very dark, and it is all in Finnish, it has a real metal style underneath (although I doubt that is their intention), it is the kind of folk style that many European black metal bands incorporate into their music.

Some youtube:
I've really only been listening to this stuff for a couple weeks so I'm just going to post a few clips without any commentary - the video is of dubious quality but it lets you hear the music which is the main point ;)

Now I'm just going to wack a heap of random vids together :D

- US Black Metal is normally pretty shit, but these guys really create the perfect atmosphere I reckon. Definitely not easy listening but it paints a vivid picture I think.

- French band. It's metal, but not as we know it, band members are also members of some black metal bands so it has a very slight black element but this is what I consider to be happy music, very dream like. Clip is just the song with the album cover showing.

are an Irish metal band. Their latest album is my album of the year from 2007 it is just incredible. They write the perfect blend of traditional heavy metal with black metal elements and have one of the greatest emotive vocalists in metal today.

are one the most extreme acts in metal and their vocalist is probably the most insane sounding fucker I have ever heard. That myspace link has 4 or 5 of their best songs available. This really is music to drive your neighbours insane - intensity off the chart!

are an Italian melodic doom metal band in the traditional style. Heavy elements of death metal are included to create a unique sound. One of my favourite bands, they have their own sound and the melodies are just beautiful. It is very dense music though and takes some time to get to know but it is worth the effort.

Dodgy fan video but you can hear the song which is the main thing!

- a Polish progressive rock band. Polands answer to Porcupine Tree, well not really, but these guys are fantastic musicians writing great music. Much more metal elements than PT and generally heavier, this is the best of both worlds. Well worth your attention.

Haven't been in here for a while but then noticed Spud's new posts.

GB, I got an Iced Earth album a little while back and I found them to be good listening. I get the odd compilation album from the library and "discovery" all these new bands, however I'm sure all of you have heard of them so I won't bother posting anything here.

Spud, I love the Agalloch stuff. Good post. I'm going to keep and eye out for there stuff now. I'm not sure about Tenhi though. I guess it would take some getting used to as it is a bit more laid back than your usual standard. :)

Keep up the good work.

Haha. More appeared after I posted! That has to be a first - me reading posts before they are finished instead of months later. I will check these ones out later. Mrs K. sitting next to me isn't too pleased about me "invading" her silence.

yeah Kanon, Tenhi is very different to my normal stuff, but I've become bored with most death metal lately and am branching out, really starting to enjoy the black metal more these days. Especially the Scandinavian stuff, and many of these types of black metal bands have a lot of elements of the kind of dark folk music that Tenhi plays, so to me it feels like black metal without the metal if that makes sense.

And Agalloch, yes, it is flawless IMO. They have 3 albums - Pale Folklore, The Mantle and Ashes Against the Grain, I consider them to be essential albums. You should be able to pick them up in any decent music shop like JB Hifi, absolutely worth every cent. Ashes is a bit more easy going then the first 2, but I prefer them, the depth of the music is belied by the simplicity of the melody.

I've been getting into abit of synth these day, came across a german group called 'BluTengel' (Blood Angel), and the music itself varies from a heavy industrial goth to synthetic pop, but they are still pretty good.

From their latest album - The oxidising angel
