Connection Types & Connectivity

As you all know, my ping sux due to only having mobile service's available in my area.
Ive noticed that in my connection status via modem s/w that the connection type changes back and forth automatically from UMTS & HSDPA.... is one better than the other, sometimes I manage a very solid & stable 100 other times its 130>999 but that is probably due more to signal strength fluctuations.
Could one of you techies pls explain the 2 ....

I've been doing a little research and it seems that HSDPA is better than UMTS.
Not sure why your settings change from 1 to the other (might have something to do with your location I'm guessing?)

So the doctor said that I wouldn't get so many nose bleeds if I just kept my finger out of there! =P
