hey Guru, help me pick the parts for my new supercomputer ;-)

Only thing with the raid is the higher possibility of failure. Twice the chance of it failing compared to a single drive. However a 4 drive setup would be ideal - 2 drives in a stripe and 2 mirroring the stripe <<< Complete over kill though as I find a single drive VERY fast.
But hey if you got the cash and want ultimate speed go for it

long live the P U T E Y !
I just setup my mates PC, and damn I'm fanging for my new beast
He had, E6600, Asus P5B, 2GB Mushkin, 8800GTS 320MB and pulled ~8300 3DMark 2006 3D marks, Q3 @ 1280x1024, totally maxed out config, 16xAA, 16xAF and he timedemo'd 507, without AA/AF he was getting 740fps. I am just busting for mine to see what it can do!

I've been thinking.....(OMGWTF?)
I'm really seriously considering a new 22" LCD - just buying a single vid card and getting a new monitor. Typical 22" res is 1680x1050 and a single 8800 (even GTS) can handle this res no worries. I'm looking at a (RRP $799 but from AusPCMarket at $550) and also the for $499. The Samsung looks to be the better deal atm.
If I get the monitor and a lower end vid card (say the 8800GTS), I will be able to game comfortably at 1680x1050 with current games and the next gen games like Bioshock, Stalker, etc. Then when games have outgrown the 8800GTS I can pick up SLI cards of whatever the new gen of vid cards are.
Reading about the 8800's it really is sounding like they will be superceded big time with next gen nVidia cards going to 65nm and GDDR4.
Goddamn having so much choice is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand it's nice to have all this fairly cheap powerful gear available, but at the same time it'd be great if the best choice was obvious.
What to do...?

readd reviews of the ones u want at least 3 or 4 on each monitor/lcd panel. then u will have a firly good idea as to what probs they have and which one is the best and suits u the best!
u could always go get one of those cheap Chimei 22" lcd [$399] panels and also a 8900gtx when available ! hehe
one of my putey mateys reckons they are pretty damn good from all teh reviews people have written on them that actually own them! cant get n e better than that !

ok ok i know u dont /wont want to overclock but this is a very simple article and well worth a read!
http://legionhardware.com/document.php?id=625
may even make u think twice about teh 680i motherbaord?
even if u dont ever ever overclock it will give u a bit of insight into your cpu/memory setup!
the only thing that E6400 does not have is the 4mb of L2 cache which somewhat reduces overall performance of your system for certian things games being one of them although it varies how much between games!
the E6600 and the E6700 would definately be a better chioce for more power! std fsb = 266mhz ! most memory rated at pc6400 is stuff all dearer than the lower specced ones!
running the fsb at 400mhz with a E6600 multiplier of 9 u could run it at 1:1 cpu:ram which would equate to 3600mhz cpu x2 [ 400 x 9 = 3600mhz] ! which is way above n e thing currently available! i would be fairly confident u could get around this speed! say around 3500mhz for sure! with the right setup!
aN E6700 has multiplier of 10 so in theory u could overclock it to 4000mhz but i would not think it would run that fast except with a refrigerated case and even then it probly wouldnt! but it would probly get close!
in a world of U B E R Performance when u throw huge $$$$$ at a GAMING RIG i just cant see why u would not over clock something like a core2duo considering it is the best overclocking cpu of all time! even better than the legendary celeron 300A !
ther are no risks . u would have to be a total IDIOT to damage it in someway !
i have to say on our lil holiday we will at this stage be in Canberra around 5/6/7th of April. i could come show u how easy it is ther spudly! if u dont like it i could just put it back to std! easy as pie!
vid card overclocking i dont recommend, but cpu O/C safe as houses!
now i am all worked up with NO core2duo to overclock! wa wa wa

well the good ol days are here again with core2duo E6300 1.86ghz running at 3ghz no probs !
and the E6400 2.13ghz running at 3200mhz no probs! 50% overclock is here again! yeehaaa
teh E6600 2.40ghz at 3.5 ghz is also very achievable . the design limits of the chips seem to top out around teh 3500mhz area ! somehwere tehr!
not recommend to run the cpu core voltage over 1.45volts! std vcore is 1.325 v. keeps to the 10% rule

sorry to get you all wet and sweaty there Guru with no finish off
No one has mentioned anything about 6400, I've been going for the 6700 since the start.
I know how to overclock, done it before, just don't care about it anymore. Probably if I was still a Uni student with 4/7 days off I'd play around, but then I wouldn't have any money either! I just want to plug it in and install games and play them, I'm not even going to build this machine, I'm getting AusPCMarket to build it for me and ship it down assembled.
Yes, I have betrayed nerd-kind in one of the most heinous ways possible. Feel free to try and have me assassinated

Spud you can get a Chimi 22" LCD monitor for $ 400 in case you didn't know. They look just as good as my Viewsonic one... Of two mates that have the Chimi's one said he had a dud pixel.
I checked your Samsung 225BW on static ice and the best price is $493.70 from a place in QLD.
The same shop has the Viewsonic for $483.70
