Adsl 1 gets boosted!
Telstra have finally rolled out there adsl2 plans.
And have also given adsl1 a boost.
I just changed my plan to the 8000/384 - effective midnight saturday.
Check the front page of whirlpool.
So as it stands compared to the old fastest adsl1 speeds being 1500/256.
The new speeds 8000/384 should yield the following data rates at optimal levels.
1500/256 - 160kb = 9.6mb per minute.
1500/256 - 160kb = 576mb per hour.
8000/384 - 800kb = 48mb per minute.
8000/384 - 800kb = 2.88gb per hour.
Now where did I put those blank dvds

fuck, at last! Telstra - world leaders in 10 year old technology.
While this is exciting news I can't help but think that it will costs a thumb and a testicle to get full ADSL1 speeds. I also think it'll probably take a few weeks before we start seeing plans available for these speeds. I very much hope to be proved wrong of course, but I just remind myself "it's telstra dude" and my youthful hopefullness dies immediately ;D

Just to bump this.
The adsl1 - high speed plans will be rolling out slowly from other providers.
Now something to take into account is this.
The adsl1 - High speed plans - ie . 8000/384 - Are permanently interleaved.
Interleaving is a technique used by the exchange to cut down on line noise and increase connection stability.
Thus meaning an increase in your ping to servers .
I used to ping 50 to xtra in nz - now I ping a solid 90.
I used to ping 25 - 30 on sq servers - now it's between 60 and 70.
This interleaving can not be turned off or switched over to fast path.
So be aware that if you want to get nice fast dl speeds with adsl1,
Be prepared to sacrifice some ping.
If you are going to make the switch to a faster internet plan - Get adsl2 - Most providers of adsl2 offer interleaving options ( Although not all do ) - So this means that you can get blistering dl speeds without sacrificing ping.

Yeah with internode I can go to my settings and change it. When I have it on the fastest speeds the ping raises, but if I want to have good pings I just change my profile to adsl 1. It makes a huge difference. Pinging to servers like slashquit using adsl2+ profile I get around 60-70 ping but when i change it, it goes down to the 20s. I allways keep it on fastest speed because havnt played any fps for quite a long time.
Even using the adsl1 profile we still download from 500-900kbs.

Well I just been on the Westnet site and noticed they are now offering 8mbit plans. I looked over all the plans hoping for some reductions in costs of their lower end plans (like 512/1.5m) but NO... talk about get totally shafted!!
I'm currently paying $74.95 for a 512/128 25/25 (50GB total) plan. I now see in their new pricing the plan i'm on has dissapeared and now the highest 512plan is a 10/15 (25gb total) for $64.95. So my download limit is HALVED and I save $10... fuck that !!!!!
Might as well forget about the 8mbit plans: 10GB/15GB $99.95 & 40GB/60GB $159.95 << OWN A BANK??? I don't know how this compares to other ISPs but that seems bloody expensive!

Got further updates regarding Westnet and they are not good either.
As of 1st Jan 07:
- They will start charging $5/month for my Static IP (has been free)
- WAIX, PIPE and traffic between Westnet members will now be included in your download limit (there goes online radio cause there is basically no good radio stations broadcast here... and counting data between westnet memembers - come on!!!)
Least I can stay on my current plan and am not forced to pick a new one (so far).
How does this compare to your ISP?
