Built up myself a new RYZEN GAMING BEAST a little while ago ! (was actually in Nov 2020)

cpu - RYZEN 5600X $469
CM Hyper 212 BLACK RGB $ 75
MB - MSI X570 Tomahawk $320
Ram - G Skill 32GB 4x8GB 3600mhz c16 16 16 36 $340
Vid card - Asus RTX 2070 Super Dual $700

Fractal Design Define R5 $200
Corsair RM850W PSU $200
Samsung 970 EVO plus 500Gb MVnNe M.2 $145
Samsung 2TB 870 QVL SSD $240

Total $3089

i was going to put the RTX2070 super in as a stop gap but vid cards are so stupidlty expensive and so it will stay in it a little longer ! I wont bother until they come down A LOT .

Runs sweet as. I had to relearn all my cpu stuff cos RYZEN is way different to intel 2600k . over clocking is pretty much pointless for gaming!
But you can tweak stuffa fair bit.

Critical stuff for max performance -

Ram must be set up to run at highest infinity fabric speed you can in a 1:1:1 ratio with the memory speed clock and memory controller clock and infinity fabric clock . The 5000 series should all pretty much run sweet at 1800mhz . They also can overclock a bit more upto 2000mhz but it seems to be a bit hit and miss how far you can push it. 5600x seemonly good for 1900-1933mhz . Some 5800X(8 core) can do 2000mhz and also some 5900X (12 core) .

In the past memory compatability has been hit and miss but if you do your home work then you should not have any problems.
The 3000 and the newest 5000 series cpus have much better compatabiltiy than the earlier 1000 and 2000 series.

AMD RYZEN also has a extra performance setting called PBO. Precision Boost Overdrive.

This pretty much lets the cpu boost higher to cpu/motherboard limits by default! it will give you a performance boost in multithreaded applications that use all cores but it will also run hotter as it supplies more power to the motherbaord. You will need better cooling. ie water cooling for all cpus except the 6 core 5600X. You could still use it on 5600X but is not that critical unless you are pushing performance to extreme limits!

You can play around in the bios with other things to boost performance.
Under volting is also possible and it works quite well with my cpu. i have found it boosts multi core performance a bit and runs a bit cooler as well so its a win win !

I have done 4 bios updates. The first one was with empty motherboard to flash it to recognise the 5600X cpu . Worked sweet as. :)

It is good to see them doing frequent updates as they are fixing issues and optimising and also adding new features!
It means support is really good from motherbaord vendors finally! Yeahhhhh ! about time !

I had the RTX 2070 Super in my old box with the old intel 2600k overclocked and it run sweet but, this new cpu 5600X beast runs soooooooooo much faster ! everything is way faster ! it is mint ! :)
long live the P U T E Y ! :)

New AMD ZEN 4 cpus released the other day with 3rd party benchmarks are out now. They are fast, hot and expensive and platform costs are stupidly high. Motherboards especially!
if i were considering it, I would waIt 6 months to let it all settle down and see how the pricing goes. It should be a lot better by then, hopefully!

New Intel RaptorLake cpus are coming out next month as well. Intel are so desperate for you to not forget about them they have instructed all hardware sellers to post RapterLake online with prices already, but you can only pre order and nothing will be available for at least another month! They will be the same, fast, hot and stupidly expensive! Motherbaords especially!

Still say the same, I would wait 6 months until it settles down then pick which is best for your needs.
if its urgent then Intel Alderlake 12000 series and Ryzen Zen 3 5000 series are your choices now! They are both good and a lot cheaper!
Overall I would say Alderlake is a bit faster and Zen 3 is a bit cheaper!
long live the P U T E Y ! :)
