On a side note I reckon there is a uni thesis there to be written on the phenomenon of game players (not just quake) who prefer to write lines and lines of code when they could simply click a box in the GUI.

There's a GUI ?

Much easier to type the cvar in console then use 'writeconfig config.cfg' to make it permanent. You don't need to open any files at all.
