found this article while lolling about watching trick jump vids, turns out Carmack never liked strafe jumping and tried numerous times to remove the exploited bug regardless of the players love of it!

If it's a bug then shouldn't it have been an easily predictable one? .. I thought Straffe Jumping was simply the resultant of two oblique (and equal sense) vectors making a bigger vector (left/right+foward). You'd have to round down pretty hard to negate that law of physics. I suppose that's what happens when gamers code simulations rather than physicists or engineers.
