'67 Datto Restoration
Lets turn this into a car and bike forum!!
well, not really, but this is what im doing when im not quaking or pretending to work these days. Restoring a '67 Datsun 411. It was a rolling shell when i bought it with most of the parts. After a close inspection when I got it home I found several shitty repair patches and bad things on the body I had to rectify so this has gone from a "I'd like to go to bare metal but that sounds like too much work" to "bare metal resto it is!"
Working from the ground up. Still unsure of final colour, that will be decided when I get everything into primer and can see the body in one colour. Might even have to photoshop a few ideas. Anyway, here are some pics for those interested, I dare say this will take me a year or two.

Modernizing it a little to start with, then if I end up liking it I'll be tearing out the old 1.3 litre engine and putting in a 2 litre turbo motor and making it crazy.
Short version of the plan: beef up the original motor a little and change carbies (thought about a super charger but doubt its worth the effort) full strip and re-spray with a few minor body mods, re-do entire interior with leather seating and modern(ish) look but keeping some elements of the retro coolness in there.
Drive it like that for a while and then contemplate a SR20DET conversion and another possible respray to signal the changes.

I have a 2 car garage to work in, a long one rather than a wide one though which isnt the best. Hopefully I'll be building an 8mx10m garage within a year. I might be making a plastic wrap spray booth tho, we'll see if I try to do it myself or if after all the priming I give in and pay someone to do it.
Ive almost got the old underbody stuff stripped off. another 2 hours with a scraper then about 4 with a grinder then a bit of sand blasting. I'll get smashing on it once I get back from NZ. I leave on Saturday so need to get my proper work stuff sorted before I leave.

I say paint it yourself mate! Depending on how much you're investing in this car sentimentally that is. like the relationship between toga and Betsy; while that bike I'm sure holds a lot of sentimentality for toga, the pride that would also come from doing it all with your own two hands is a prize in it's self!
I WOULD MUCH RATHER PLAY IN A TEAM OF WINNERS THAN IN A WINNING TEAM !

I want to go a more modern paint rather than the older style enamel look. Thinking either a metallic blue or red, or a candy blue, red or root beer. There is also a slightly indented line running down the length of the car and thinking of putting something along in that as something funky.
You talking about the one with the blinds in the back inky? Thats a decent looking car with a 1.8L worked mg engine in it.

Finally got a decent amount done on it. over half way through stripping the undercarriage of the old flaking sound deadener coat. Using a combination of heatguns, scrapers and paint stripper. Tomorrow is more paint stripper and maybe get onto some angle grinders with wire brush attachments to get the stubborn stuff off.
I got all the paint I need for the Chassis and underbody as well as some fillers today. Got a product called Deox-C as well which is a rust remover. Claims it can dissolve rust and leave the metal untouched. Ive tested it on some old rusty tools I couldn't use any more and I now have 2 new looking hammers, fixed an old rusty padlock and a pair of pliers. Ive left 3 sets of pliers in there over night including one set that were rusted so tight they are rubbish. It works awesome so far. Comes in a powder that you mix up as needed. Its a great product for forgetful folks like me that leave tools in the rain all the time
Im glad I bought a high quality mask, Paint stripper stinks!

So, got 2 coats of a specialised rust preventing primer thats meant to be stupidly tough. Ive seen videos of people hitting it with hammers and it surviving. Only painted the bottom of the car for now and will be putting sound deadener over a lot of it for ride comfort and then putting a topcoat over it. not show car finish but a lot nicer than flaking 50 yr old random shit.

Very happy with getting something major looking done after all the cleaning.
