The Serious Pics Thread

In the same vein as the funny pics thread. Pretty much anything goes here - beautiful, ugly, sad, happy, whatever. It would be great if you could include a story about the pic, especially if it is of a "situation", many photos can become much more meaningful if the context is supplied along with the photo.

So I'll kick off with a few pics from around the place:

Not meaning to start off on such a sombre note but I find this to be an amazing photo. Full story on . In a nutshell this photo taken in Sudan during the famine. The photographer chased the vulture away but left the child there.

It was taken by Voyager I in 1990 as it left the Solar System. The circled dot is, in fact, Earth.

"Earth Rise," was taken during the Apollo 8 mission by astronaut Bill Anders on December 21, 1968.

This is a photo of jumping from a balloon at 102,800 feet (19.5 miles into space) to test a muti-stage parachute designed to keep high altitude test pilots and spy pilots from entering a flat-spin, blacking out, and dying.
